Curious Tales

Strange Stories of the Buddha and his Followers

The early Buddhist texts are full of wonderful stories about the Buddha and his early followers. They have the capacity to inspire us by bringing the Buddha to life in our imaginations. Their teachings convey transformative wisdom so that we may lead more fulfilling lives and connect with our inner happiness.

Certain of the stories may, however, pull us up short. Some are difficult to decipher while others appear humorous or absurd. They may puzzle or even shock us. What are we to make of these Curious Tales? Roger Farmer explores their deeper meaning and deciphers some of their possibilities.

‘It is so often through background stories that we get real insight into the lives and experience of people in Buddhist texts. Roger Farmer has selected a range of some of the most intriguing of these and, with intelligent analysis and careful attention to background, shown us what it would  have felt like to follow the teaching of the Buddha in ancient times.’
