Roger Farmer

Roger Farmer grew up in Belfast. After medical school, he did postgraduate training in Manchester and London.

His interest in Buddhism goes back to his teens. After a move to London in 1983 Roger became involved with the West London Buddhist Centre. He has now had a personal meditation practice for about forty years. As a member of Triratna he has taught meditation, run courses and given talks.

In 2019 Roger completed an MA in Buddhist Studies, which led him to learn Pāli and Sanskrit more systematically – pursuits that continue to this day. His particular interests are Early Buddhism and connecting with Buddhists from different traditions. Visits to Buddhist pilgrimage sites in India, Sri Lanka and the Far East have been hugely inspiring.

He recently retired after a long and distinguished career as an NHS psychiatrist and senior lecturer, having published extensively on addiction and relapse prevention.

Roger’s other interests include travel, film, theatre and music. He is married with two children and three young grandchildren, and finds looking after a small child an excellent exercise in mindfulness and seeing the world afresh!
